An Forecasting Platform Trader Made $436,000 from Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
Yet the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A bill introduced on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
