The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
