With an announcement that pairs financial support with stringent conditions, Washington has pledged $2 billion for UN humanitarian efforts. But, this funding came with a blunt message for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Pledge During Wider Funding Cuts
This commitment was made amid major reductions in American funding for humanitarian operations. Additional reductions are expected from other key donors such as the UK and Germany. The official, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the statement together with the United Nations' emergency relief chief.
"This contribution will help save millions of lives," stated the UN's humanitarian chief. However, this sum represents only a fraction of America's traditional spending, which were estimated at around $17 billion just a few years ago.
Funding with Major Restrictions
The latest US aid comes with without restrictions. The money is focused on only seventeen nations, including Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Notably, Yemen and Afghanistan have been denied funding.
The representative justified this by pointing to concerns that there, aid money were being diverted to militant groups. "President Trump will not allow a single penny of public funds going to organizations designated as terrorists," he stated firmly.
Additionally, the conditions explicitly rule out spending on projects related to tackling global warming, deemed not "life saving" and against "American interests."
